Joined Wolves as a trainee in 1967. Richards became a regular goalscorer for Wolves and helped the club to three special finals.

He was a key member of the 1974 and 1980 league cup final winning teams and also helped the  club to a runners-up medal in the 1972 UEFA Cup.

Capped once for England. Richards had injury problems during his career and his Wolves career came to an end in 1983.

A brief spell with Derby and Portugal club Maritimo rounded up his playing career in 1985
