The Story: Bob Wilson
Wilson was signed back in 1963 and played a total of 308 appearances for
The Gunners. He arrived at the club for a transfer fee of £ 6000. and
signed on as an amateur.
He was the last player to have played as an amateur in the top flight of
English football, that happened when he made his debut against
Nottingham Forest in 1963.
Wilson was patient and waited for his chance to play regular first team
football, and was first understudy to Jim Furnell. He had to wait until
1968 to settle as a regular first choice.
A number of great appearances and a key player when Arsenal won the
European Inter City Fairs Cup in 1969 and he was also a solid first
choice in the 1970-71 double act team winning both the league and the FA
Cup.
Wilson played twice for Scotland, but was born in Chesterfield, England. |
